Eligibility & Registration

who can compete?

Current students enrolled in high school, middle school, any level college, or university anywhere on Earth. Community college students are absolutely welcome!

I am homeschooled, can I still join?

Yes! As long as you are a part of a team of five other students, you are more than welcome to join us!

I am an open education student, does that still count?

Yes! As long as ALL members of your team are also enrolled students, you qualify!

Do I need to be in animation classes?

Nope! As long as you have a faculty advisor, you’re eligible.

Can alumni participate?

Sorry, current students only. But alumni make great mentors and cheerleaders!

What if I can't find 5 team members?

Talk to your faculty advisor – they might know other students looking for teams.

Do we need written approval from the school?

No need! As long as your faculty advisor has approved and secured permission from the school for your teams to participate we do not require any written confirmation.

Can teams mix students from different schools?

We prefer same-school teams, but if you cannot find a team you can join another schools team with permission from the school.

Can teams mix students from high school and college?

If you have a team member that is in college, you would be considered a college level team, and the faculty member and approval should be coming from the college student(s) school.

When do we learn the theme?

During the live announcement October 2nd, 2026 at 3pm PDT. Not a second before!

Can we work from home?

Depends on your school’s policy. Some require on-campus work, others allow home-based teams.

What if our internet crashes during submission?

Plan ahead! Have backup internet options and submit early if possible.

Can we submit a film shorter than 30 seconds?

Yes! Under 30 seconds is fine. Over 30 seconds = immediate disqualification.

What if we submit at 4:01 PM?

Disqualified. We’re not kidding about the deadline. Manage your time!

What is the judging criteria for the films?

Films will be evaluated using the following criteria (10 points each):

1. Storytelling – Was the story clear, entertaining?

2. Art Direction/Animation – How was the production value of the film?

3. Creativity/Interpretation of Theme – How creative was the team’s interpretation of the assigned topic?

4. Level of Completion – How much of the film was completed?

technical questions

What software should we use?

Whatever you’re comfortable with! We have no preference or restrictions.

How do multiple animators work together?

Figure out your workflow in advance. Some teams assign scenes, others divide tasks (keyframes vs. in-betweens, etc.).

Can we use AI tools?

We have a strong restriction against using AI in this contest for creation of ANY graphics or sound design. Any use of AI in this way will lead to immediate disqualification. This film should be 100% completely human artist made!

Can we use Public Domain artwork/free to use stock images?

You can use public domain art work and free to use stock images as long as you manipulate it in some way (such as creating a collage). You can NOT use the images “as is” for your background or any element of your film.

What frame rate should we use?

No restrictions as long as your final film uploads successfully and meets time requirements.

What are the prizes?

Amazing! Cash, software licenses, equipment, studio swag and industry recognition. Total value typically exceeds $100,000.

Who are the judges?

Professional animators and industry experts. We will announce the panel on our social media.

Can we use our film in portfolios?

Absolutely! Studios love seeing this experience on resumes too.

EQUIPMENT & SUPPORT

Is there tech support during the contest?

Limited support available through our submission platform and social media channels.

Can teachers help with technical problems?

Nope! Part of the challenge is learning to troubleshoot yourselves.

What happens if someone cheats?

We investigate all reported violations thoroughly. Confirmed cheating results in disqualification and possible banning from future contests.

Can we report rule violations?

Yes, please do! Email us immediately if you suspect violations.
